São Miguel Island: Furnas – Senhor dos Passos

Furnas is a charming town beautifully located in a valley, surrounded by mountains. Today, on Sunday March 12, it was particularly charming because of the religious feast of Senhor dos Passos. The inhabitants of Furnas started getting ready for the big procession by decorating altars on its main streets.

I cannot imagine how many of these green brunches they used to make is so beautiful:

Three hours later:

Two processions started at 4pm. The statue of Jesus was carried in one of them. The other procession carrying the statue of the Virgin Mary came from a different church in a different part of the town.

The two statues met in front of the green altar, and from that moment the Mother and the Son “walked” together around the town until the procession reached the main church.

The mass took place shortly after the procession.  You can see the statues on both sides of the altar.

What a Blessing that you had the opportunity to be there during Lent and to experience this. Did you notice any other tourists there? It’s great that you are there amongst so many locals. They seem very welcoming!

It was great to be among the local people and celebrate their way. My impression was that many tourists stayed in their hotels and celebrated Sunday by the pool. During the mass the church was half empty. Furnas is a popular destination not only for tourists coming from other countries but for local people too. It takes two hours to fly here from Lisbon.
