Hello my firends! I would like to invite you to visit the eastern part of the island. Sometimes you need lots of patience when you drive around the island.

Today we start in Povoação and finish in Nordeste. Here is a picture of the map, showing Furnas, the lake Furnas, Vara (the highest summit on the island, 1103), and the two towns we are about to see.

Povoação, what a lovely, quiet town near the ocean, with beautiful views and streets. See for yourself:

My husband always smiles and looks enthusiastic in the morning. It is later, after 1pm that he refuses to pose for the pictures.

This monument is in memory of the first settler who landed here in 1432.

Look at this, two familiar statues. I found out today, that many towns organize similar processions as the one we saw in Furnas – Senhor dos Passos. They take place on different Sundays of the Lent. It is an important tradition in Portugal.

Many churches are decorated with azulejos. It is a form of Spanish and Portuguese painted tin-glazed ceramic tile work.  IMG_8900

Now we start to drive towards Nordeste: windy  road, not many tourist, beautiful views!

This beautiful spot is a viewpoint: Ponta da Madrugada. Sometimes I have an impression that the entire island is one big garden.

A small town in a distance with its fields and gardens, located on a cliff. The Atlantic Ocean is right behind the church.

And now, four pictures from Nordeste:

And, inside the church, the two statues ready for the procession of Our Lord of the Steps (Wikipedia’s translation)
