Hello my friends, we are now in the central part of the island and this is one of its most scenic places: Lagoa do Fogo. It is a caldera with a lake at the bottom. The caldera walls are steep, but there is a path to the bottom. Here we are trying to go down that path:

There is another path on top of the crater:

Chandra and Marek, we think it will be an amazing spot for you. And look who is very happy on this island:

On our way to Ribeira Grande we were able to see a geothermal plant: the complex of silver-painted structures that supply the island in geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is heat energy generated and stored in the Earth. (Thank you Google!)

And now the second largest town on São Miguel – Ribeira Grande. This is a very busy town with much more traffic.

Portugal is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fatima. Pope Francis will visit Fatima in May this year.

Ribeira Grande’s architecture is typical of São Miguel; it consists of buildings made of basalt, with original windows and decorations.

Look what they sell in a typical hardware store:

Everywhere you look on São Miguel, there is a reminder that you are on a volcanic island:

And now, something good to eat – bean soup with Azorean kale, sopa de feijão:
