Akureyri is beautiful!!!! I love it and I want to come back here for at least a week. It is the second largest urban area outside of Reykjavik, with a population of around 18,ooo. It is situated in north-east Iceland, in the longest fjord in the country – Eyjafjörður.

The town is a very popular tourist destination, a cruise ship comes here almost everyday in summertime.

One of the most beautiful landmarks of Akueyri is its church, designed by renowned architect Guðjón Samúelsson (he also designed the cathedral in Reykjavik. It is a Lutheran church.

An interesting fact about Akureyri:

All over Akureyri, you will find hearts-in the traffic lights, in the windows in people’s homes and other peculiar places. The hearts appeared following the financial crash of 2008, when there was a need for positive thinking and to put emphasis on what really matters.

Even the red traffic lights are in the shape of hearts.
