Hello my dear friends and blog leaders, this time Bom Dia from the beautiful island of Madeira! Together with Radek, we are going to explore Madeira for a week. It is an autonomous region of Portugal, well known for its mild climate, subtropical vegetation and a very rich history and culture. Madeira is located in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa.

It is a volcanic island, with  rugged mountains and high cliffs. SATA airlines offer regular flights from Toronto to Madeira, but you have to change planes in Ponta Delgada, the capital of the Azores.

We start our trip in Monte, the suburbs of Funchal. Monte was developed in the late 18th century as a healthy retreat area from the smells, noises and commercial activities of the town of Funchal. Beautiful villas and mansions were built here. For me, the most beautiful aspect of Monte are the gardens and parks, it is a paradise for all those who love nature.

Our hotel is in a 18th century mansion, Quinta do Monte, surrounded by beautiful terraced grounds.

At the heart of the garden is the beautiful Baroque chapel of the Quinta do Monte. The terrace behind the chapel offers amazing view of the city of Funchal and of the ocean.

Monte is dominated by the church of Nossa Senhore do Monte, inaugurated in 1818.
