Monte’s top attractions
Hello from Monte! Monte is a very pleasant neighbourhood in Funchal, the main city on the Portuguese island of Madeira. Today, I would like to present three main tourist attractions. All of them are located not more than 300 meters from the church of Nossa Senhora do Monte. And the church itself can be seen from everywhere in Funchal because it is located at the elevation of 600 meters.
Right beside the church, a toboggan run is offered to all those who wish to go on a 2-km trip to Livramento.
But before you go down and leave Monte, make sure you visit Monte Palace Tropical Garden. The entrance to the park is less than 200 meters from the church.
Here are some highlights from the park, my favourite is the oriental section.
The third attraction in Monte: Monte Cable Car. It takes you to the old part of Funchal called Zona Velha and to the ocean.
As you can see, Madeira is not a beach destination!!!!!
Zona Velha (Old Town) is an old neighbourhood that was allowed to fall into disrepair and was neglected for many years. Just a few years ago, this area was rejuvenated and became Funchal’s nightlife centre. Zona Velha is also known for its project: Art Opens Doors. It features some amazing examples of street art painted over many of the neighbourhood’s doors.
I love taking pictures of local people:
As I mentioned before, Madeira is not a beach destination but it is definitely a hiking destination. Hiking trails are everywhere on the island. I will talk about it later when we hike one of their lavadas.
Thank you for spending another day with us! Tomorrow is a day trip around the eastern part of the island.
What a unique way to get around, wouldn’t have expected a toboggan! Looks like another adventurous day!
Everyday is so adventurous, Chandra, that we cannot catch our breath. But it’s worth it.
