Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) is Sri Lanka’s most renowned architect. His style is called ‘tropical modernism’. Some main characteristics of his work are:

  • concern with nature and natural setting, he wanted his buildings to blend with the environment
  • use of local material, ecologically sound designIMG_1222In Colombo we visited Seema Malaka temple. Today, we are going to see one of several hotels designed by Geoffrey Bawa: the Blue Water Hotel on the west coast, near Colombo built in 1996–1998. Visiting the hotel came with a very pleasant surprise:
