Hello from Northumbria in England! Today we will visit the second largest still inhabited castle in Britain – Alnwick Castle.

The 1000 year old Alnwick castle is one of the largest inhabited castles in England. It has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percy’s, for over 700 years. It was built after the Norman Conquest and survived the War of the Roses 1455-1487.

Alnwick Castle is a popular location for films such as Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. It was portrayed as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films.

It was also used as a setting for the final episode of Downton Abbey Christmas special, season 6. Cast and crew spent two weeks in July and August 2014 here using the castle rooms, grounds and parklands. Artificial snow was made to convince viewers that it was truly Christmas time.
